The Kola Peninsula is the northernmost territory of European Russia, situated north of the 66th Parallel. The Kola Peninsula boasts more than 130.000 lakes and rivers. The rivers are an important habitat for the Atlantic salmon, which return from Greenland and the Faroe Islands to spawn in fresh water. As a result of this, a recreational fishery has been developed, with a number of remote lodges and camps available to host sport-fishermen.
The Atlantic Salmon sport fishing program of Kola Travel is mainly based on the South coast of the Kola Peninsula and in particular on the Umba, Varzuga and Kitsa rivers. Coming close to nature and away from civilization you can enjoy excellent fishing and get a truly unforgettable experience on the number of fish that passes along these rivers. Having been here once, you will not wish to look for a better place. The Umba, Varzuga and Kitsa river shores are a fishing paradise for both amateur and professional fishermen. Experienced guides will show you the best place for the great fishing. The fishing is based on “Catch and release”. The fishing camps at Umba, Varzuga and Kitsa River possess several advantages:
Kola Travel can take you to many excellent locations for fly-fishing and/or casting from riverbank or boat.
You can fish with spinning or fly fishing (fly rod). When fishing with spinning, flies in combination with floaters and sinkers, spinners of different colors (from 10 to 50 g) and wobblers serve as bait. When fly fishing, it is better to use bright, shiny flies and streamers.
Considering that we mainly offer catch-and-release sport fishing, only barbless single hooks are allowed to be used. Hooks #8-10 are recommended.
If you are fishing with a spinning rod, then choose a “one-handled” rod 1.5-2 m long. Remember that salmon is a strong fish, so choose strong, reliable gear. For convenience, you can equip the rod with access rings. Fishing line - 0.35 - 0.5 mm on a free-running open reel (for example, Shimano).
If you are a fly fisherman, then we don't have to teaching you! Fly fishing gear is chosen based on personal preference, but, of course, also on the characteristics of the pool and depending on the season.
Beginning fishermen, as a rule, use short "one-handled" rods (from 2.7 to 3.5 m.) More experienced fishermen "two-handled" rods from 3.5 to 5 m long. Reels - inertial, with a drum diameter of 10-12 cm. In this case, you need to take into account the weight of the rod, the lighter the better. It is recommended to use a line of 9-12 gravity class, it all depends on the water level and the speed of the current.
Flies are selected based on experience and depending on the season. Large flies are used at the beginning and end of the season. Dry flies work well in the middle of the season. Colors can be any, usually bright. The most popular fly-fishing flies:
